Fall Home Maintenance Checklist
Happy fall! Although the weather felt more like mid-summer, last Friday marked the first day of fall. This means that it is time to prepare your home for the cooler months. Below is a check list of things you should do to your home before the winter arrives.

Roof Maintenance:
- Clean and inspect gutters and downspouts for adequate drainage
- Have chimney cleaned and swept (wood burning fireplace)
- Inspect your roof for damage, lifted or missing shingles
- Check for moss on roof and apply treatment
- Check eaves and gables for holes or openings and install screens to prevent birds, rodents or other pests from entering
In the Yard:
- Rake leaves (compost the pile and use as mulch)
- Aerate ad fertilize lawn so its bright in the spring
- Cut back perennial plants, mulch around base
- Remove dying annuals and plant flower bulbs
- Remove Hoses from spouts and drain - Store indoors
- Drain and turn off sprinkler system and turn off outdoor water
- Clean, maintenance and store lawn mower and other yard tools for winter
Home Exterior:
- Check windows and door for weather tightness, seal cracks and install stripping where needed
- Check walls and foundation for any cracks that may need repair
- Check attic and crawlspace for signs of moisture
- Remove hoses from from spouts and replace bulbs
- Check exterior lights and replace bulbs
- Store outdoor furniture and cushions
- Finish any outdoor caulking, painting or staining projects
Inside the Home:
- Have furnace professionally inspected and serviced
- Change furnace filter for fire safety and air quality
- Have furnace professionally serviced
- Dust blinds and wash curtains
- Clean kitchen cabinets and pantry
- Clean bathrooms cabinets
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, change batteries
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors when you set clocks back for fall
- Insure your fire extinguisher is in working order
